The history of Japanese J1 League football
The J1 League was founded in 1993 as Japan's first fully professional football league. It was created to develop the sport in Japan and elevate the national team to world-class level. The inaugural season featured 10 clubs.
The league has undergone several format changes throughout its history. From 1993 to 2004, it used a single-stage or two-stage format. Since 2005, it has primarily used a single round-robin system. The season runs from February to December each year, with 20 clubs competing in the current format.
The J-League is considered one of the strongest leagues in Asia and has produced numerous world-class players. Japanese clubs have won the AFC Champions League multiple times, with Urawa Red Diamonds, Kashima Antlers, and Gamba Osaka among the continental champions. The league has also been instrumental in the development of the Japan national team.
